Gospel Experiences

Hey Y’all!

I’ve been picking up some southern phrases since I’ve been spending so much time with a bunch of them. :) My name is Bethany Schindler and I’m going to be a junior at the University of North Dakota. I am starting nursing school in the fall, and it has been really cool because there are about four other people here who are also majoring in nursing.

We have been here for about 15 days, and I still cannot believe that I am in Haiti. God has been doing some amazing things in my life in the past two weeks, and I wish I had the time to write about all of them, but I don’t so I will try to make it short! One of the major things God has been teaching me here is that He is in control of every situation. We went to some IDP camps last week which brought out some really strong emotions. I had two very different experiences, and God showed me a lot through both of them.

One of the camps we went to was very different from all of the other ones. I was used to really friendly people who would run up to us and start talking or playing games with us. In this camp, people were more aloof and not as friendly. There was a more negative mood in the camp, and it was pretty hard to see all of the people living in tents and trying pretty hard to get a bag of food from us. After this camp, we were all pretty discouraged and had pretty negative attitudes toward that experience. I personally found a lot of things in the bible that showed me I needed to change my attitude and have more compassion for these people.

So the next day, I was ready to try and have a better outlook even if it was a similar experience, but I ended up having an amazing time. Clarice, our Haitian translator, Erin, Aaron, and I went out to talk to people in their tents and pray for them. In the third tent, we met a lady who told us she did not know about God or have any sort of a relationship with Him. Clarice shared the gospel with her, and she told us that she wanted to have a personal relationship with Jesus

Christ and wanted to pray with us right then. So Clarice and her prayed in Creole and then we all prayed for her in English and Clarice translated so she would understand. Then right after, we got to talk to two guys who had been listening, and they both wanted to be encouraged and wanted to know what they could be doing to share the gospel with other people. So it went from a pretty discouraging night to an amazing, sweet time and a new sister in Christ!

So to sum it up, God can really work in any situation and even through language barriers, and He does things that I totally don’t expect. I know this was probably way longer than it should be but it is hard to sum up these powerful experiences in a few words. Anyways thanks for reading this; thanks for all the prayers you guys are sending our way.
