June 28- Driving around Port Au Prince

This morning we took a field trip into downtown Port-Au-Prince with the Haitian students as our tour guides. We saw the U.S. Embassy, the president’s palace, and toured the city.

It’s hard to wrap your mind around the earthquakes’ impact without knowing what the city looked like prior. Everywhere you go you see tents. Some provided by aid agencies, others homemade with nothing more than sticks and tarps. While looking at one IDP camp the Haitian students told us that the land used to be a park. What was once a green park where people went to relax, walk, and eat lunch is now covered with rows of tents, packed in as far as we could see.

The other difficult thing to understand is how an earthquake quakes. You could drive down one street with houses that look untouched, turn the corner, and see nothing but piles of rubble and cracked cement. It’s so hard to describe, so hard to stand in the midst of the devastation, so hard to hold your camera up to the bus window to get the best picture while people sitting on the sidewalk just stare.
